有機合成において選択性の制御が重要であることはいうまでもなく、過去数十年の間に新しい試薬や触媒の開発などによって選択性制御の手法は大きく進歩しました。そういったテクニックは多くの文献に散見されますが、一か所にまとめられておらずまたデータベースからの検索も難しいため、有機合成を学び始めた学生が習得するのは容易ではありませんでした。

本書はそのような選択性制御の手法を効率的に学べるよう、修士・博士課程の大学院生を読者に想定して書かれた教科書です。第1章は化学選択性・位置選択性・立体選択性・エナンチオ選択性をそれぞれ取り上げ、反応の選択性を向上させるための一般的な原理を具体例に基づいて解説します。第2章以降では、合成的に有用な官能基変換を個別に取り上げ、第1章で挙げられた原理を実際に応用するために試薬や触媒、反応条件などを適切に選択する方法を教えます。

実用性を高めるため、実際の合成反応で登場する機会が多く、また選択性制御に困難が伴いやすい化合物および反応が例として用いられています。また過去15～20年の文献から選ばれた豊富なレファレンスが、さらに研究を深めるための手引きとして役立ちます。

共著者のうちEkkehard Winterfeldtは独ハノーファー大学名誉教授で経験豊富な有機化学者、一方Tanja Gaichは、スクリプス研でPhil S. Baran教授に師事した後2010年にハノーファー大学でPIとなった若手化学者です。
